The
installation Tonight Shall be My Calvary delves into the artist's curiosity
concerning spirituality and where it resides in the context of contemporary
western culture. This strange untidy setting stands in quiet contrast to the
order and tradition that we perceive in the image of a man taking his religious
belief to another realm. Doren has created a space filled with alternative
spiritual clues that at once honor and unravel some of the signs traditionally
read as Christian signs of spirituality. He seems to be creating a space for
the spirituality that surrounds the deceased man's religion and Doren's own
quest for where that spirituality resides for himself, or the viewer.
"…Doren
creates a disturbing effect of processed piety,
an uneasy confrontation with the ritualization of death."
